Louth may be the smallest county on the island, but it holds its own for live music: LocalJams has 77 venues on file, split almost evenly between Drogheda with 33 and Dundalk with 29, with Ardee, Carlingford, Clogherhead, Greenore and the villages making up the rest. Over a hundred gigs are listed for the coming months, about a third of them ticketed, and the tags are led by folk and trad, followed by rock, country, jazz and pop.
McHughs Venue on West Street in Drogheda is the county's busiest listed venue, mixing a Trad Session every Thursday at 9pm with gigs that range from Run to the Beast's Iron Maiden tribute to a Latin American and Brazilian music night. Drogheda also has the TLT Tommy Leddy Theatre, with the Icons of the 70's Show, The Mersey Beatles and a Dark Side of the Moon show, Barney Macs with an Early Session on Thursdays at 4pm, Drogheda Arts Centre on Stockwell Lane, and Clarkes Bar with the No Name Band on Friday evenings. In Dundalk, the Spirit Store on George's Quay lists David O'Dowda and Matt Benson, Kris Drever and Harry Hudson Taylor, Mo Chara on Roden Place runs a Trad night every Monday, An Tain has Ralph McTell and the Setanta Choir, the Oriel Centre at Dundalk Gaol hosts Liam Ó Maonlaí, Ciaran Moran and Mark Geary on Saturday nights, and the Carrickdale Hotel carries Tommy Fleming and a Christmas folk double bill. Lily Finnegans in Greenore adds a weekend run of pub gigs in October.
Thursday is the day for sessions in Drogheda, early at Barney Macs and late at McHughs, while Dundalk's trad night is a Monday fixture. Only one listing in the county is currently flagged free.
