The Cork live music scene

What marks Cork out is not the number of gigs, though it is second only to Dublin, but the share that is free. Around half of all the live music in the county costs nothing to walk into, far more than anywhere else, because the city's pubs publish their sessions as standing weekly fixtures. Folk and rock are the leading flavours, with jazz a clear third, which fits a city with a long jazz-festival habit, and country, pop and blues follow.

The session pubs are the backbone. Sin É on Coburg Street has a traditional session every evening from 6.30pm, part of the Lee Sessions trad trail, and a Sunday-afternoon session from 5.30pm, with named folk acts on the later slots. An Spailpín Fánach runs a 9.30pm session on Mondays and from Wednesday to Saturday. The Corner House has a Thursday session from 6pm, The Gables runs free sessions on Thursday and Sunday nights, and the Oliver Plunkett, the big bar with its own stage on the street of the same name, has trad from 6pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The Welcome Inn is the outlier: free folk and ballad acts most nights of the week with the same rotating cast, so if you take to one of them you can see them again within the fortnight. Brú Bar on St Patrick's Street adds free live music from Monday to Thursday at 8pm and an open mic on Sunday nights, and JJ Walsh's and Ó Súilleabháin's both run free weekend nights too.

The ticketed rooms are within a few minutes' walk of each other. Cyprus Avenue on Caroline Street is the city's main standing venue, and its programme swings from touring rock names like Black Stone Cherry and The Undertones to Latin party nights and club events; a ticket there is usually somewhere between €20 and €40. The Savoy on Drawbridge Street does a similar job with more DJ-led nights and Irish headliners of the Sorcha Richardson and Jenny Greene kind. Coughlan's on Douglas Street is the songwriter room, with a Monday-night residency and a mix of free and modestly priced shows from acts like Roesy, Seamus Fogarty and Niall McCabe. Fred Zeppelins on Parliament Street runs multi-band rock bills for around €15, Crane Lane Theatre on Phoenix Street is mostly free jazz and blues, and the Pavilion on Carey's Lane mixes tributes and club nights.

For seated concerts there are three options. Live at St Luke's, the converted church on Summerhill North, tends towards the folk and singer-songwriter end and is the most expensive room in the city, typically €30 to €40. Cork Opera House carries the bigger Irish names, Paul Brady among them, and the Everyman on MacCurtain Street fits a smaller music programme between its theatre runs. Cork City Hall on Anglesea Street hosts a cluster of concerts every autumn, and Triskel Arts Centre favours double bills, so check the support act.

West Cork is a genuine second circuit rather than an afterthought. Sea Church in Ballycotton, east of the city, runs 8pm shows most Fridays and Saturdays, from folk headliners like The Whileaways and Eleanor Shanley to tribute nights. De Barra's in Clonakilty is the long-standing folk club of the south-west and still hosts album launches and names like Daoirí Farrell. Connolly's of Leap, near Skibbereen, likes a Saturday-afternoon show, Levis in Ballydehob books touring folk acts into a tiny bar, and the Maritime Hotel in Bantry runs shows on its quay. Kinsale, Macroom and Buttevant have smaller calendars.

Ticketed prices across the county generally run from €5 to around €45 with most shows in the €20 to €30 band, so a night out in Cork is cheaper than Dublin and the free alternative is always within walking distance. Fridays and Saturdays are busiest, but the session pubs mean Tuesday and Wednesday are livelier here than in most counties. The late-night option is thin: only the club nights at Cyprus Avenue and the Savoy run on past 10pm. October is the peak month, when the jazz festival weekend brings hundreds of extra gigs into the city, and the summer festival season in West Cork keeps June to August busy.

If you want to plan a route, the river does the work. North of the Lee, Coburg Street and MacCurtain Street put Sin É, the Corner House and the Everyman within a couple of hundred metres of each other, with Live at St Luke's up the hill on Summerhill North. South of it, Oliver Plunkett Street, Caroline Street, Carey's Lane and Phoenix Street hold the Oliver Plunkett, Cyprus Avenue, the Pavilion and Crane Lane, with Coughlan's a few minutes further on Douglas Street and the Opera House and City Hall on the quays between. A Friday that starts with the 6.30pm session at Sin É and ends at Cyprus Avenue is a 15-minute walk end to end.

Traditional sessions in Cork
